If your goal is expressed in distance, such as walking a mile, a 5K or a half marathon, but your pedometer counts steps, you need a conversion. The calculation is a simple division: distance divided by the length of one step. The catch is that step length varies from person to person and with speed, so a mile can be fewer than 2,000 steps for a tall person striding out or over 2,700 for someone with short steps. This calculator uses your own stride length and returns the number of steps for any distance, along with the steps in one mile and one kilometre.
How to use the miles to steps calculator
- Enter the distance in miles, kilometres, metres or feet.
- Enter your stride length. To measure it, walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 10.
- Read the steps for that distance, plus steps per mile and per kilometre.
Miles to steps formula
Distance in metres = miles × 1,609.344 or kilometres × 1,000
Steps per mile = 1,609.344 ÷ step length (m)
One mile is exactly 1,609.344 metres (international mile; NIST Handbook 44). A step here is a single footfall, left or right. Some sources use “stride” for two steps, so check the definition if you compare numbers.
Worked example
How many steps in a mile with a 75 cm step?
- Distance = 1 mile = 1,609.344 m; step = 0.75 m.
- Steps = 1,609.344 ÷ 0.75 = 2,146 steps.
- Per kilometre = 1,000 ÷ 0.75 = 1,333 steps.
A 3.1-mile (5 km) walk at a 70 cm step is 7,127 steps, and a 13.1-mile half marathon at 80 cm is 26,353 steps.

Why step length varies
- Height and leg length. Taller people tend to take longer steps, but the relationship is loose.
- Speed. Step length grows as you walk faster and shrinks when you stroll, climb or tire.
- Terrain and load. Hills, sand and carrying a bag shorten steps.
- Age and health. Step length declines with age and with some medical conditions.
Using the numbers
To go the other way, from steps to distance, use the Steps to Miles Calculator or the Steps to Kilometers Calculator. To estimate energy use see the Steps to Calories Calculator and Calories Burned Walking Calculator, and for pace targets the Running Pace Calculator. If you are unsure of your height in different units the Height Converter (ft/in ↔ cm) converts it.

Frequently asked questions
How many steps are in a mile?
It depends on your step length. At 75 cm (29.5 in) a mile is about 2,146 steps; at 65 cm it is about 2,476; at 85 cm about 1,893. Many sources quote 2,000 to 2,500 steps per mile for typical walking.
How do I measure my stride length?
Walk 10 normal steps in a straight line, measure the distance and divide by 10. Repeat once or twice at your usual pace and average. A longer stride at a brisk pace or a shorter one when strolling will change the count.
How many steps is a 5K or a 10K?
A 5 km route is about 7,143 steps at a 70 cm stride and 6,667 at 75 cm. A 10K is double. Runners take more, shorter strides than walkers at the same speed in some people, so use your running stride.
Why does my tracker give a different number?
Trackers estimate stride length from your height and the cadence they detect, so their distances can be a little off for your gait. Setting your measured stride length in the app usually improves accuracy.
How many steps should I take a day?
Tudor-Locke and Bassett (2004) described under 5,000 steps a day as sedentary and 10,000 or more as active. Cohort studies since suggest benefits flatten around 6,000 to 8,000 steps for older adults and 8,000 to 10,000 for younger ones.
